Overview of mountain biking route:

MTB route Tjentište – Donje Bare is situated on Zelengora mountain in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The region belongs to National Park Sutjeska. The MTB trail leads near the historic region where the battle named Battle of the Sutjeska (in Croatian language Bitka na Sutjesci) was taken in May/June 1943 during WWII. The numerous monuments are situated near the trail. The landscape of Sutjeska river, Zelengora, Volujak and Maglić mountains is very nice too. The route is fast and easy, mostly placed on a good carriageway. The end point of the route is Donje Bare lake and region. Most of the junctions are not labeled. The route can be combined with Maglić, Mratinje – Tjentište (Maglić) and Tjentište – Zelengora routes.

Getting there: Europe, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, Foča, Tjentište or coming from Croatia follow the direction Dubrovnik, Trebinje, Bileća, Gacko, Čemerno, Tjentište.

Description of MTB route:

The starting point of the route is Tjentište valley and village. From Tjentište proceed to Foča, pass the bridge over Sutjeska river and than turn left at this crossroad. Pass the gate of National Park Sutjeska and keep straight on the paved road. Around 3.3 km from the gate there is the fountain and resting place. At the right side of the trail there is the stairway that leads to Sava Kovačević monument. He died at this place and he was the national hero during former Yugoslavia. Proceed on the paved road and after about 1.4 km from the fountain there is the junction. Keep straight and proceed on the carriageway. After short ascent follows the descent section along Hrčavka canyon. At the end of the descent there is the next junction. Keep left and ascend on the carriageway. The carriageway leads straight to Donje Bare region. At the end of the carriageway turn right on the stairway that leads to the hut and Donje Bare Lake. At Donje Bare plateau there is the monument of 2nd Dalmatian Division (in Croatian language 2. dalmatinska brigada). I visited the monument and than rode back on the same trail to Tjentište. In the valley there is the monument of Battle of the Sutjeska and Sutjeska river. For more details check above interactive Map and below Gallery & Notes of the route.

Notes & references:

The route is recommended during summer, late spring and fall. During summer time count to pay the fee to visit National Park Sutjeska. There are springs of drinking water at the fountain near the resting place and near Donje Bare Lake. GPS unit with uploaded route is a must.
