Kustošija – Ponikve trail is situated in the south west area of Medvednica mountain near Zagreb capital. Most of the trail is placed along the beech forest. On the middle way of the trail there is Risnjak Hut. The hut is opened during weekends. First half of the trail is unpaved road and than follows the singletrack. After the rain there is a lot of mud on all sections. The starting point is Gornja Kustošija and the end point is Ponikve plateau. If you want you can ride in the opposite way too. The route can be combined with The ridge of Medvednica, Bistra Saddle and Podsused – Ponikve routes.

The starting point of the mountain bike route is the crossroad in the suburb of Zagreb named Gornja Kustošija. Ride straight through Kustošijanska street. At the end of the street there is the junction with unpaved roads. Turn left and than after 20 meters turn right in front of the small house. The unpaved road named Kustošijanski Makadam leads to Risnjak Hut with a short ascent than a short descent and finally the long gradully climb to Risnjak Hut. On the first sections there are some junctions with the trails for hikers. Just proceed on all junctions and follow the unpaved road. At height of around 700m there is the junction. Turn left and Risnjak Hut is around 100 meters from the crossroad. From the north side of the hut the trail proceeds as the singletrack to Ponikve plateau. The singletrack is labeled with red/white signs on the trees. After around 1.6km on the first junction near the opened hut turn left and after around 100m on the second junction turn right to Ponikve plateau. From this point follows gradully descent to Ponikve plateau. It’s a long, nice and easy trail through the beech forest. Proceed straight on all junctions. Around 1km before Ponikve plateau, on the right side of the trail there is the spring of water named Jambrišakovo Vrelo. Around 40 meters after the spring turn left to Ponikve plateau. Near Ponikve plateau there is a main paved road named Zelena Magistrala. The road proceeds back to Zagreb city. For more details check above interactive Map and below Gallery of the route.
