Overview of mountain biking route:

The Bistra Saddle (Bistransko Sedlo) mountain bike route is situated in the west part of the Medvednica mountain. Medvednica mountain is in the neighborhood of Zagreb capital. There are many trails like this one. Regarding elevation profile and length this trail is suitable for the training and I have used it very often. During and after rainy days the trail is very muddy. Regarding the slope of  elevation profile I don’t recommend opposite direction of the trail. The route can be combined with The ridge of Medvednica, Kustošija –  Ponikve and Podsused – Ponikve routes.

Getting there: Europe, Croatia, Zagreb, west part of Zagreb, district Susedgrad than proceed via Zelena Magistrala road to Ponikve. Ponikve plateau is very well known starting point for hiking too.

Description of the route

Near the end of  Zelena Magistrala highway turn left and there is Ponikve plateau. Just follow the carriageway on the right side of Ponikve plateau. At the end of plateau the carriageway turns into the labeled singletrack across the forest. After about few hundred meters on the left side there is a spring named Jambrešakovo Vrelo. Proceed straight and follow Risnjak Hut direction. The trail is labelled with red/white signs placed on the trees. Few kilometres before Bistra’s Saddle there is a resting place and the junction for Risnjak Hut and Grafičar Hut. Proceed straight to Grafičar Hut and the singletrack leads soon to Bistra’s Saddle where is the crossroad and resting place too. From Ponikve to Bistra’s Saddle the trail is easy with the gradually climb. From Bistra’s Saddle decend to north west course on the carriageway in the direction to Bistra. All the time keep the straight direction on the main carriageway, keep left on most of the junctions and don’t take care any more about red/white markers on the trees. The carriageway  will reach Poljanica stream. Pass the stream and keep right to Poljanica village where turn left on paved road in the direction to the Bistranski Novaki. On the first crossroad in Bistranski Novaki turn left and on the second turn left again and ride along the street named Novačka to the east course. At the end of the village the paved road turns into the unpaved forest’s carriageway. At the first junction turn left on the steep carriageway. After few hundred meters the carriageway turns into singletrack. The singletrack is steep. After 1-2 kilometres the trail joins the singletrack coming from Ponikve plateau. From this point ride back to Ponikve plateau using the same section of the trail. For more details check above Map and Photo Gallery of the route.
